What is this?

After the election, many of us talked about getting out of our echo chambers to talk to someone who supported another candidate. Not to convince, but to understand.

If this sounds like you, sign up here or follow our newsletter. Once we find a match, we'll shoot you two an email introducing you for a one-on-one conversation.

Super productive. She was extremely nice – and though we forgot about the guide, it went great. We both were very respectful. I would be open to chatting with another person as well again if there’s more people looking to chat... I gained a lot of perspective, which is good because empathy is something I lack for certain.

Everything I see in the news and my social feeds is ugliness and divisiveness. It was really refreshing to be able to sit face-to-face and find common ground with another mom like me who just happened to have different views on public policy. I highly recommend Hi From The Other Side to anyone who truly wants to better understand their fellow Americans.

As a Trump supporter who was not particularly vocal about expressing my support I was happy that this forum allowed for a civil way to converse with those on the other side about my support. I know there are others like me who would appreciate a program like this as well.

Won't this just end in a shouting match?

Maybe. But we’re hopeful there are people who really want to engage in a civil conversation.

We also deliberately ask some more human questions in our sign-up to try to screen for people who seem nice.

Finally, when we match you, we also provide a conversation guide to help you get off on the right foot. We put the guide together with input from conflict negotiators and experienced facilitators, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on making it better.

This is AWESOME, but I'm not ready

No worries. You can follow along by subscribing to our newsletter to get updates and stories from those who have been matched.

Are the conversations anonymous?

We send you and your match an email introducing you to each other, so the other person will have your email address. Some of you have mentioned wanting to be completely anonymous, and we get that. It’s scary to talk to strangers who may really dislike what you stand for. However, we think that having a live conversation on the phone, on video chat, or in person will be most productive.

Why do you require facebook authentication?

Facebook authentication does allow us to make sure that real people are signing up to have conversations. We only request your name, email, and username from Facebook, so we can't see any other information you have on your Facebook.

WHO'S BEHIND THIS?

Hi From The Other Side was started by Henry, a grad student in Boston. He's getting help from some great people like his friend Yasyf who's a computer whiz. This wasn't an initiative from a political organization or anything, just people who care about being better listeners.
